The original release did not include "Reward", which was added to later pressings after it became a hit single early in 1981. This version of the album dropped "Second Head" and "Bouncing Babies" from the UK track line-up, but included "Suffocate" and "Reward" - the latter featuring a 12-second instrumental intro not included on the various UK releases of the song. Alas, Helyntion Beca (The Rebecca Riots) seems to have been overlooked by the programmers of the Radio 1 playlist, a fate that also befell such other recent Cope numbers as All the Blowing-Themselves-Up Motherfuckers (Will Realise the Minute They Die That They Were Suckers). It's also representative of the path Cope would travel, and the new material on the second disc makes it a worthy upgrade for anyone with an older copy.

By March 1982, the Teardrops' internal situation was as fraught as ever following assorted disagreements and individual meltdowns. The only downside of this release is that Reward is just "plonked in" and sounds like the afterthought it was. This reissue of the album was also remixed – most noticeably on "Went Crazy" and a longer version of "When I Dream". In November 1980, Alan Gill left The Teardrop Explodes, claiming not to enjoy the touring lifestyle. David Balfe, Gary Dwyer and Alan Gill all showed up to accept the award; Julian Cope ultimately refused to attend the ceremony. It has dreamy but insistant feel from the start(unsurprising given the drug-soaked state of the band - see Julian's autobiography. Cope and Wylie briefly teamed up in The Nova Mob (along with future Banshees drummer Budgie) which lasted for one gig before Cope reunited with McCulloch in the similarly short-lived Uh! But there wouldn't have been any stories of drugged lunacy had the Teardrop Explodes not been good at what they did in the first place. The tour proved to be a chaotic affair: neither Agius nor Hammer fitted into the group socially and Cope was retreating further into an LSD-fuelled isolation, retaining only Dwyer as trusted companion. The final Teardrop Explodes release was an EP, You Disappear From View, from which all five songs appear here.

opened Reward, while the faux-naif title and jaunty tune of Brave Boys Keep Their Promises cloaks a load of surprisingly Duncan Bannatyneish stuff about fighting your way to the top.

Wilder featured a far greater use of synthesizer arrangements and loop experiments than Kilimanjaro, predominantly at the instigation of keyboard player David Balfe (who acted as Cope's principal creative collaborator in the studio). In the booklet Balfe reveals the influence of Talking Heads / David Byrne and Brian Eno on his arrangements and his choice of a Prophet 5 synthesiser, and this sheds light on some of the interesting rhythms, particularly on 'Seven Views'. Having arrived in Merseyside in 1976 (as a student attending City of Liverpool College of Higher Education), Julian Cope became involved in Liverpool's emerging post-punk scene. However, co-manager David Balfe had also been lobbying for full Teardrops membership: by July 1979, he had succeeded in ousting Quinn and taking his place as keyboard player. Finkler's sacking earned the band a fair amount of ire from the closely linked and competitive Liverpool scene (and from Ian McCulloch in particular) as well as establishing Cope's reputation as something of a tyrant.
