About this deal

Some of the concepts in the poems could also be used to address certain issues, for example ‘Gone’ to highlight stranger danger. It would be a wonderful drama task for children to perform the poems or simply to read for some light relief. Nightmare' about a boy on the underground doesn't appear as though it works but once again, read aloud and most certainly when listened to be the author, it works to perfection. The general style of the poems can all be said to be conversational, this vital as it would allow children to easily relate to the pieces of writing.

Mustard, Custard, Grumble Belly and Gravy | Michael Rosen Mustard, Custard, Grumble Belly and Gravy | Michael Rosen

And we sometimes forget just how absolutely great it is to be cuddled as the baby in “ Who Likes Cuddles? Both books went on to be bestsellers and both poet and artist are stellar names in the world of children’s books.

The book includes an introduction by Michael Rosen and an audio CD of the book, with all the poems also read by Michael. For children this means that it makes a vital link between being able to talk and the ability to read books to themselves. A wonderfully accessible introduction to poetry for Rec-Y2; with rhyme, word-play and repetition many of the poems roll off your tongue like music helping children learn how to read. I love the way sounds and words are explored, expanded and repeated, they are so good to read out loud.

Don’t’ by Michael Rosen Activity sheet for ‘Don’t’ by Michael Rosen

This volume includes Michael Rosen's 'You Can't Catch Me' and 'Don't Put Mustard in the Custard' with illustrations added by the incomparable Quentin Blake. Today is World Poetry Day and to celebrate I thought I would review a book of poems by Michael Rosen, illustrated by Quentin Blake– Don’t Put Mustard in the Custard.I loved it – and more to the point, my six-year-old read the whole thing in one sitting, and then proceeded to read the poems to me.

The people he produces on the pages of this book aren’t cutesy, they are wild, impulsive, and sometimes goofy. The poems are meant to be read aloud and they would be great to act out and read aloud to a reception, year 1 or a year 2 class at the end of the school day. I hadn’t heard about the writing frameworks you mentioned and I have to agree with you, creative writing needs some freedom! As a child, it was refreshing to read these poems by Michael Rosen, published in a proper book, because guess what?
