Crace, John (11 September 2016). "The Little Book of Hygge by Meik Wiking – digested read". The Guardian. ISSN 0261-3077 . Retrieved 25 May 2017. He and his research have been featured in more than five hundred media outlets, including The Washington Post, BBC, Huffington Post, the Times (London), The Guardian, CBS, Monocle, the Atlantic, and PBS News Hour. Hygge is the Danish word for ‘cosy’, and it’s what we’re all about here at ScS – making your home a place where you can relax and unwind, all year round. Our homes should be a place of comfort, a place to feel safe when we shut the door. Somewhere to be ourselves, to unwind and create special memories. Inspired by Danish design and traditions, this beautiful new book from Meik Wiking shares how to turn your home into a sanctuary and live like the happiest people in the world. Culture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful — and this is still in our DNA today. We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special.

If you have your own outdoor space, there are some easy things you can do to make it your own peaceful retreat.

How do you make a hygge bedroom?

It’s mid-November and I live in Newfoundland, Canada. Winter is right around the corner, and the Almanac’s predicting it’ll be a cold and snowy one. For most of my adult life, January, February, and March have been my least favourite months of the year. McDonough, Megan (May 29, 2018). "Americans are obsessed with hygge". The Washington Post. Retrieved 17 April 2023.

Overall, this book makes us consider questions like “How do we create spaces and places that have an impact on our wellbeing?” And “Can we design for happiness?” I took many notes, and by the end, I had some answers to these questions and a plethora of ideas to incorporate into my own space.

2. Add more candles

Every hygge home needs that perfect place to curl up with a blanket and relax. In fact, there’s even a Danish word to explain this perfect little spot: hyggekrog , or a cozy corner . Think of it as your safe space where you can be at peace, read a book, and have a cup of tea or hot cocoa. To create your own hyggekrog, start with your comfiest chair or a favorite corner of your sofa. Layer pillows and throws to make your nook the coziest spot in your home , position it by a window or add a warm lamp for soft lighting, and add a side table for the perfect spot to put your favorite cup of tea. By convention, the word hygge is thought to originate from a Danish word meaning "to give courage, comfort, joy." [2] Hygge stems from hyggja, which means "to think" in Old Norse. [2] Hygge is derived from the Old Norse hugr, later hug, which means the soul, mind, consciousness. [3]

And there was STILL that obsession with candles, which the author plugged at every opportunity. To which I say, "Dude, I have cats. And I wouldn't even trust those curious little buggers around a single, heavily-supervised birthday candle, let alone a whole housefull of potential fire hazards." Not to mention that lighting candles, or anything that produces smoke and ash, in an enclosed space isn't really the healthiest thing one can do for their body. And since Good Health = Happiness, candles and their environmental fallout seems kind of counterproductive to the end goal. But if candles make the author happy... Hey who am I to judge. I probably have some happiness triggers that would cause him to scratch his head and make the WTF face. The Hygge Home will teach us all how to create a much-needed cozy safe space in our homes into which we can retreat to escape the tough things going on in the outside world. Meik will explore the size of our spaces, the way we decorate our homes, the amount of natural light coming in, how much access to green space we have and how we can extend these design principles from inside our homes to our neighbourhoods and beyond.

6. Highlight warm elements

You may be thinking to yourself, what is a hygge nook? This is a small space within the home that is all yours. Whether you use it for some quiet time to enjoy your morning coffee, or relax at night with a glass of wine, or even read a good book. Your hygge nook will be personalised to your needs and will complete your hygge home. To really set the mood you may want to consider how much light the room is getting. The Style Studio Mirage blind is the perfect option for a nook as you can have it fully open, fully closed or anywhere in-between. There are several benefits to incorporating hygge into your living space! The very definition of hygge suggests that a primary benefit of the lifestyle is an increased sense of comfort and overall positive feelings towards one’s own environment.

But we shape our homes and then they shape us. They impact how we act and how we feel. As a Dane and a happiness researcher I am excited about exploring how to create homes where we not only live — but thrive.’ Meik Wiking

Meik Wiking is CEO of the Happiness Research Institute, research associate for Denmark at the World Database of Happiness, and founding member of the Latin American Network for Wellbeing and Quality of Life Policies. True A LOT of info about lighting, placement of stuff, and general energy flow/vibe comes directly from the much older practice of Feng Shui. It’s also about ensuring you have plenty of light in your home, whether from natural sunlight or artificial sources like lamps and candles.
