AudioengineA5+ gave me the impression of a more “natural” style speaker. The bass is subtle, the midrange density is appropriate, and the treble is bright but not too sharp. The whole is clean, clear, large sound field, accurate positioning, less rendering, and a little bit of monitor speakers’ smell. The mid-bass sounds a bit cold and rigid. The low volume of A5+ is not much, and it is flexible, but the dive does not seem to be sufficient. The Hugo 2 is a larger, improved version of Chord’s Mojo DAC. Not only does it offer more features, such as a switch filter, a dedicated crossfeed button (X-PHD), and more inputs and outputs, but it also delivers spectacular sound; for its price, it’s the best-sounding DAC we’ve come across. But what makes this DAC stand out is its compact size. Measuring only () (44 by 44 by 14 millimeters), it weights only () (28 grams). The wireless capability, small size, and lightness make this one of the most portable digital to analog converters out there. The D1 DAC allows inputs for both optical and USB, with analogue RCA outputs to easily connect to any system. Plug in your PC, TV or any other digital audio device to hear great quality music and audio. The D1 makes setup easy with no software, app or install drivers needed to get going. The D1 DAC is a simple plug-and-play audio solution. For the most part, however, most people will not need an external DAC. Their devices would probably have one embedded in them. People mistakenly think that when they get bad sound quality, buying a DAC will fix it. It doesn’t.

Agree with pretty much everything you described about the D1’s sound. It’s a very “fun” signature that is very easy to enjoy. I only wish it had a 1/4 inch output but for the price I don’t really mind. A headphone amplifier allows you to increase the maximum output of your smartphone, laptop, and other music sources so that your headphones can deliver the output level you want.

I am in a similar situation, with some differences. I have the Audioengine D1 DAC, Audioengine HD6 powered speakers, and PSB's 450 subwoofer. I added a Wyred 4 Sound Remedy and connect from my iMac (2010) via a good optical cable. I use JRiver, which I have dialed in after many hours of seeing what the software can do. I have mostly Apple AAC 256 files, but some CD 1411 and 24/96 high res albums. With a high grade DAC circuit from AKM, the Audioengine D1 coverts the digital audio signal with low noise, reproducing the music exactly as intended. The D1 DAC can process up to 24-bit/192kHz resolution for detail and clarity from your digital music. The headphone amplifier in the D1 is capable of driving a wide range of headphones, satisfying even demanding enthusiasts. The DAC is powered directly through the USB bus with two stages of regulation to ensure no effects on the audio. Audioengine D1 24-bit DAC and Headphone Amplifier features If you think of D1 as a desktop decoder, the power has some issues driving passive speakers. The power of the headphone amplifier of OPA2134 low-noise operational amplifier used by D1 drives couple hundred impedance headphones, which also seems to make people worry about its power.

I'm not into DSD and it's unlikely I will be in the near future. I have to rely on Tidal to get access to CD quality versions of the albums I bought in AAC before I knew about the format differences. I own very few physical media. Roon does make that easier as I can stream the Hi-Res versions of the low-res albums I own... Unfortunately, our Installation Service excludes all gas appliances. It is the customer’s responsibility to find a gas safe engineer to connect the appliance. Any work conducted by a third part gas safe engineer will be at the customer’s expense and we will not accept any liability for their work. Maybe (probably) they’ve updated the D1 circuits. I had the original-production D1, then the D3, and thought the D3 had a smoother cleaner sound, but they probably share the same electronics now. The problem with a Jotunheim (apart from possible matching issues), is the fact that it does not solve my input issue. I need multiple inputs, and the Joti only has 1 USB. So, that would mean than in the Schiit range, I'd have to go for a Bifrost / Asgard or a Gungir + Asgard or one up... Putting me very close or over the price of the all-in-one Questyle anyway...Step 2 –- Connect the analog output of your D1 to any audio input of your active speakers, stereo, etc . In the same way, at the output end, 3.5mm has a higher priority than RCA. When the earphone is plugged in, the RCA output will be muted and automatically restored after being unplugged. These are fully considered in the product design stage, so various switch switches are not so needed. Performance with Laptop

In the vast majority of cases we will not be able to install the cabinet doors to built-in laundry products as the fittings very rarely match up. We will try our best however if we are unable to do this we will still install connect to plumbing and put the appliance in situ. I guess a less convenient option would be to use a remote control device (I have one for my speakers, but DAC's like a CMA600i offer one as well...). I like the fact that I can adjust the volume through a Roon Remote when I am not near the DF. I hate it when I have to use Roon Remote when I am near the DF. A "pot" like I can adjust when I'm near like on the D1 that can also be adjusted through Roon would be ideal. I read brands like Ressonence Labs offer this? Is this a common thing? Pair the speakers with a non-consumer, audiophile-grade linear amp (class A, A/B, triode, ultra linear etc). Integrated or with a separate pre-amp. Due to its AK4396 DAC and TI OPA2134 low noise opamp, this baby will satisfy even the most demanding audiophiles.

Schiit does direct sales with a return privilege - people say they take a long time to burn in, so set it up and let it play 24hr/day for a couple of days at least

Thanks to needing a cable the D1 doesn’t, like the D3 ( reviewed here), require a reach-around on my iMac. And, thanks to its requiring pretty lax amperage, it works well with most devices capable of spitting USB signals. As the story goes, modern iPads and iPhones don’t spit the required amperage and can’t get the D1 running. The D1 uses the ESS ES9018 DAC, which is well regarded for its low noise and high fidelity. Due to the high signal-to-noise specs of the ES9018 and the added benefit of double redundancy power source conversion and filtering, the D1 presents impressive low noise and low distortion characteristics. The D1 can process digital audio at any bit depth up to 24-bits and any sample rate up to 96kHz (192kHz using optical) I feel blessed to be afforded the opportunity to hunt for excellent sound quality, and today I’ll let you know if the D1 fits that criterion for an incredible price! Although not large, the B1 has relatively solid workmanship. The gray metal shell and plastic panel are low-key and professional. The metal shell helps maintain good electromagnetic shielding, but it also means that an external antenna becomes necessary. I use headphones 80% of the time and started out with a few Senn IEM's until I bought a B&O Beoplay H2 3 or so years ago... I like it so much that I started researching what makes audio sound better... I ended up buying a Philips X2 first, and last year an Audioquest Nightowl Carbon which I really like...

Hi-Res Conundrum: Should I Go for 24/192 or Is 24/96 All I Need?

The build of the Audioengine D1 is stellar for the price. It feels like if you dropped it, it would be okay. a note produced on a musical instrument as an overtone, e.g. by lightly touching a string while sounding it. Key specs – Dimensions: 306 x 224 x 44mm; Max bit depth/sampling rate: 32-bit/384kHz; Inputs: USB, balanced XLR, unbalanced RCA, coaxial, TOSLINK optical; Outputs: XLR3, XLR4, 6.3mm, 4.4mm Recently is got Tidal HiFi sub, and discovered Roon. Another great improvement! My D1 is hooked up to a USB 3 peripheral switch I use to switch it between my pc and mac (together with a mic and mouse). The PC is a speedy all SSD / dual GPU / custom watercooled desktop, which I usually prefer over the MBPr (touch bar 15" model) when i'm working at my home office. Roon runs it's core on the pc.
