There is a further mathematical ‘How to’ in the next section for those that really want to know. For the purpose of preserving your own herbs and making your own tinctures at home, the process is very simple.

Myrrh is an oleo-gum resin obtained from the stem of C. molmol that consists of 2% to 10% of a volatile oil composed predominantly of sesquiterpenes, sterols, and steroids. Evans 1989, Michie 1991 The water-soluble gum portion (30% to 60%) contains polysaccharides and proteins as well as ethanol-soluble resins (25% to 40%). After undergoing hydrolysis, the gum produces a variety of sugars. Hanus 2005 Furanosesquiterpenes are responsible for myrrh's odor and are believed to exert anesthetic, antibacterial, antifungal, and hypoglycemic effects. Hanus 2005, Zhu 2003 Additionally, 2 sesquiterpenes extracted from C. molmol, furaneudesma-1-3-diene and curzerene, have demonstrated activity on CNS opioid receptors. Dolara 2000 The gum has been reported to contain an oxidase enzyme. Evans 1989 The related C. guidottii contains the sesquiterpene (+)-T-cadinol. Claeson 1991 When the oleo-gum resin is mixed with water, it forms an emulsion. El Ashry 2003 Your best friend is plain grain alcohol such as a 35%-50% ABV vodka. Vodka is best because it contains no flavour or additional ingredients. However, Sometimes brandy has also been traditionally used.According to the hadith of Muhammad, narrated by Abu Nuaim on the authority of Abban bin Saleh bin Anas, Muhammad said, "Fumigate your houses with mugwort, myrrh and thyme." ( Kanz-ul-Ummal). [14] The Encyclopedia of Islamic Herbal Medicine mentions the same hadith: "The Messenger of Allah stated, 'Fumigate your houses with al-shih, murr, and sa'tar.'" The author states that this use of the word "murr" refers specifically to Commiphora myrrha. [15] The other two are Al-Shih (possibly mugwort) and Sa'tar (or Za'atar - thyme). Some people should be especially cautious with myrrh oil and may need to avoid it entirely. Bear this in mind if any of the following conditions apply to you ( 45, 47): Myrrh gum is commonly harvested from the species Commiphora myrrha. Another commonly used name, Commiphora molmol, [4] is now considered a synonym for Commiphora myrrha. [5]
