Antibacterial effect. Honey has been shown to have an antibacterial effect on bacteria commonly present in wounds, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE). Part of this resistance may be through its osmotic effects.

Apply the MEDIHONEY gel or paste directly to the wound. If you’re using a calcium alginate dressing, use sterile scissors to resize it, and then gently apply the dressing to the wound bed.

How do I use MEDIHONEY?

Keep in mind that it’s best that MEDIHONEY be on the skin for 12-24 hours at a time for maximum effectiveness. If you or your loved one is having a hard time keeping the dressing intact, soak a gauze dressing in the MEDIHONEY (or use the MEDIHONEY square dressing) and apply it directly on the wound, then top with an abdominal pad dressing. When using MEDIHONEY will I need any extra supplies? Medical-grade honey has an impressive profile of bacteria-fighting properties-- crucial in a time where emerging antibacterial resistance poses a serious challenge to the healthcare community and public at large. MEDIHONEY dressings are incredibly effective as an occlusive barrier, protecting the damaged tissue from pathogens and in some cases, reducing the pain and discomfort of wound dressing changes. Facilities that use MEDIHONEY dressings often find that unpleasant wound odor is reduced. Inflammation also tends to subside with the application of medical-grade honey.

There has been a report of a Silver-coated dressing which caused raised liver enzymes and an argyria-like syndrome in an adolescent burn patient ( 43). Another common treatment is povidone iodine, which has the advantage of antiseptic properties and is well suited for skin disinfection prior to invasive procedures. However, the antiseptic activity of iodine products is hampered by interactions with the protein content of the wound exudate and severe adverse effects of systemic absorption of iodine on thyroid function must be considered in infants and toddlers as well as in adult patients with latent hyperthyreosis.

Kateel et al. 14 found that three of five RCTs concluded that topical honey was better than conventional dressings for the healing of diabetic foot ulcers while two of the five RCTs found no difference in healing between the two treatments. No adverse events were reported. 14 The authors also included observational studies that reported greater efficacy, decreased amputation, and better compliance with honey for diabetic foot ulcer. 14 Two of the five RCTs summarized by Kateel et al. 14 were also included in the broader SR by Jull et al. 15 In one randomized controlled trial, the mean healing time of wounds treated with MediHoney dressings was significantly faster than the mean healing time of wounds treated with conventional dressings. 4 During the healing process, due to autolytic debridement, it is common for non-viable tissue to be removed from the wound resulting in an initial increase in wound size. Although an initial increase in wound size may be attributed to the normal removal of non-viable tissue, consult a healthcare professional if the wound continues to grow larger after the first few dressing changes. We’ve created an FAQ for those new to wound care and MEDIHONEY. This article answers the following: There are a variety of types of wounds, acute wounds (including cuts, scrapes, burns, trauma, needle punctures, and surgical incisions acquired in healthcare settings) and chronic wounds (diabetic foot ulcers or pressure ulcers). 1 The management of wounds presents a burden on the Canadian healthcare system. In 2011 to 2012, more than 2.6 million wounds were treated in Canadian healthcare settings. 1 In 2013, it was estimated that infected pressure ulcers and surgical wounds cost individual hospitals around one million dollars a year. 1

Three SRs 13 , 15 , 16 performed MAs, and the HTA 12 and two SRs 14 , 17 did not perform any quantitative analysis. Some patients (5 out of 100) experience pain after the application of medical honey to the wound. In some of them, treatment with medical honey has to be stopped. Few patients with pre-existing atopic diseases show local atopic reactions. No severe systemic atopic reaction due to medical honey has been reported in the literature. Medical honey has to be kept in the wound for 12–24h a day. Thus, it is combined with particular dressings like calcium alginates of hydrofiber dressings, which add substantially to the overall cost of treatment. Depending on the amount of exudate, the dressing with medical honey has to be changed up to 2 times a day in acute inflammatory wounds. The most often practised change interval for medical honey dressings is every 24–48h. Many of the studies related to honey for burns were conducted by a single research group based in India which may limit the generalizability of the findings to other clinical regions. Jull et al. 15 mentioned that practitioners using this information to inform their clinical practice need to be conscious of how well the populations and interventions presented in these studies align with their own patients and think critically about the clinical relevance to their own practice. It’s always possible that honey or its container can become contaminated, or, a person could have an allergic reaction. Sometimes, this is to the bee pollen that’s naturally present in honey. MEDIHONEY was developed as an alternative to traditional occlusive dressings and, in some cases, these medical-honey bandages have outperformed their competitors. Medihoney™ is licensed for wound care in Australia, Europe and the USA. In Europe a CE-certification exists declaring Medihoney™ as medical product.
