On the evening of July 1, he is alleged to have told his secretary, “You will not fine me alive at sunrise. But the prophecy’s veracity is in doubt because it didn’t appear in print until long after that fatal encounter.

In several quatrains he mentions the name Hister, although this is the classical name for the Lower Danube, as he himself explains in his Presage for 1554. This last edition has two prefaces, the first is written in the form of a message to his son, and the second is addressed to Henry II. He is author of the bestselling Nostradamus: The Complete Prophecies for the Future and Nostradamus: The Good News and has translated and written the ultimate collection of Nostradamus's prophecies in The Complete Nostradamus. Little else is known about his childhood, although there is a persistent tradition that he was educated by his maternal great-grandfather Jean de St.His quatrains, published in 1555 as Les Prophéties, have never gone out of print and have been claimed to have predicted the execution of Charles I, the Great Fire of London, the French Revolution, the rise and fall of Napoleon and Hitler, the shooting of JFK, the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, the 9/11 attacks, the 2015 mass murders in Paris, even the abdication of King Charles III (of which more later). The quatrains, published in a book titled Les Prophéties (The Prophecies), received a mixed reaction when they were published. His Nostradamus Trilogy – thrillers based on the theme of Nostradamus's 58 missing prophecies – is an international bestseller, with rights sold in 38 countries. Nostradamus claimed to base his published predictions on judicial astrology—the art of forecasting future events by calculation of the planets and stellar bodies in relationship to the earth.

Moreover, no quatrain suggests, as is often claimed by books and films on the alleged Mayan Prophecy, that the world would end in December 2012. On the evening of 1 July, he is alleged to have told his secretary Jean de Chavigny, "You will not find me alive at sunrise. He became known for creating a “rose pill,” an herbal lozenge made of rosehips (rich in vitamin C) that provided some relief for patients with mild cases of the plague.

He began making prophecies about 1547, and he published his prophecies in a book entitled Centuries (1555).

Latin versions of both had recently been published in Lyon, and extracts from both are paraphrased (in the second case almost literally) in his first two verses, the first of which is appended to this article. Nostradamus's supporters have retrospectively claimed that he predicted major world events, including the Great Fire of London, the French Revolution, the rises of Napoleon Bonaparte and Adolf Hitler, the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and September 11 attacks.Only in the 17th century did people start to notice his reliance on earlier, mainly classical sources.
