I started this book some time ago, after reading a few books on feminism, and the rape culture we live in. I’d always thought of domestic abuse as something that happened to ‘other people’, but it affects many couples and families from every part of society and is often very well hidden. Obsessed with her and constantly watching her, he becomes abusive and turns her into a fearful wreck.

I especially didn't think it made sense that this person who was so paranoid she spent hours checking her door, would go walking around in dark alleyways to check on her crappy friend. If you’re not one of the thousands of readers who’ve been knocked sideways by this thriller then start here. Brilliant plot, interesting character development, thrilling suspenseful moments, unexpected turns, a fantastic read especially if you are up for an all night book journey, just you and the book. Elizabeth Haynes is a very talented new face in the murky world of crime fiction and definitely a name to look out for in the future. Into the Darkest Corner is a gripping read and an important and powerful book: I couldn’t put it down once I’d started it.It is seamlessly put together and the clever juxtaposition of chapters from the present and the past keeps the reader on the edge of their seat. Its prose is simple and the sort of novel you can happily cosy up on the sofa (once you have locked all the doors and windows) and know you are going to be in for a cleverly crafted psychological thriller. Elizabeth Haynes is also the author of Revenge of the Tide, Human Remains, Never Aloneand The Murder of Harriet Monckton. Good lord, if he’s ever released again he needs an ankle bracelet that goes off if it even gets into the same town as her! The two different time periods are written in a slightly different format showing the chilling tale of a woman slowly slipping into her darkest corner, then showing her trying to recover from all the damage.

I've read other books about domestic violence and abusive boyfriends, but none seem to have captured the complete shift in personality of the abuser quite like this one does. I know she told that it happened, but how come her friends had a different explanation, that sounded more logical than hers?In After Cathy’s parts, her OCD is detailed well but the rest of her person after her traumatic past isn’t always convincing enough to be real. I was guilty of having very fixed ideas about violence in the home and the sort of people who were victims of it, and this stereotype was challenged in every way by the reports I was analysing.

It had to be an exceptional book to break my book-blog-block and this is it: a nervy, heart-racing, page-turner — the debut thriller by Elizabeth Haynes. However, the pacing is simply too slow, and that’s troubling because this is supposed to be a thriller. And so a difficult situation can be made much worse, and the cycle of violence continues and escalates. I recommend to anyone who loves a good psychological thriller but with caution as there is some violence. Os primeiros capítulos são bem cansativos, até aprendermos todo a rotina de Cathy antes de sair de casa, as verificações te incomodam na boca do estômago.
