I want to thank the publisher for providing me with a free copy through Edelweiss for an honest review! For the most part Miller tows the party line (she doesn't divert much from Wilder's account of the family dynamics, or invent many new experiences in Kansas). The West Ada School District (Idaho) removed “You: A Novel” in December 2023, based on ratings from BookLooks.

Some of my favorite scenes from the Ingalls Family’s story are included, only now from Caroline’s perspective, and I couldn’t help but smile while I was reading. Each passage was written with so much care and love, I now can't imagine reading Laura Ingalls Wilder's series without a copy of Caroline close at hand.

It is a similar voice to how Laura wrote the initial books, and given that it's directed at adults and not children, the extra wordiness of the prose can be forgiven, but I found myself rolling my eyes at times.

So because those two reasons detracted so greatly from what would have been a great overall reading experience, I gave an otherwise inspiring book the rating of 1. In 2018, Kepnes also adapted You as a series for Netflix and has since continued the novel series with You Love Me (2021) and For You and You Only (2023). But there is more to Goldberg than Beck realizes, and much more to Beck than her oh-so-perfect facade. The book takes place over a year, and it would be nice to see some of the other events from Caroline’s point of view. Edwards’ provision of Christmas for Mary and Laura would be seen with great gratitude by their mother.

But I found it all handled gracefully and beautifully - yes, there is sensuality and even sex in this book, somehow to the horror of one-star reviewers who seem to believe women of the past did not experience sexual desire or enjoy this aspect of married life or that even if they did we shouldn’t talk about something so scandalous.

Caroline is pregnant and afraid there won't be a woman to help her when it comes time for the baby to be born. Hiding for spoilers but this feels kind of silly since anyone reading this probably already knows the general story from Laura's second book, Little House on the Prairie. I also thought Caroline was portrayed with a much weaker constitution and resolve than in my previous opinion.Laura was relegated to a squawky child in the background, while Mary was more of a focus for Caroline.

In adapting to this strange new place and transforming a rough log house built by Charles’s hands into a home, Caroline must draw on untapped wells of strength she does not know she possesses. Full of light, laughter and larger-than-life characters, The Visitors is a novel of one woman finally finding her voice and choosing her own path forwards. Kepnes has published 3 sequels: Hidden Bodies in 2016, You Love Me in 2021, and For You and Only You in 2023. This is honestly the most enjoyable book I’ve read in several years, and will hold a permanent spot in my collection. Nevertheless, Little House fans will welcome this new perspective even as it attracts new readers to the beloved series. For those who’ve read Little House on the Prairie (LHOTP), it’s a familiar storyline and thus there may not be that compulsion to keep reading just a bit more to see what will happen.
