The distance between the book (reasonably well written) and the immense weight of the achievement is like comparing a reasonable peak in Alps with K2. This is a shorter book (just over 150 pages) that I can see being popular with readers who like nonfiction tales about war or adventures.

In 2018, after years of serving as a Gurkha soldier in the British military, he embarked on a “wild effort” to reach the pinnacles of the world’s 14 tallest mountains in fewer than seven months, an attempt that would “shatter” the previous world record of seven years. And I'm glad I read the book, too, because there was more details and information and drama than the movie explored. At first I wasn't sure if the writing style was to my taste- it seemed a little overly self-focused (but why not? It is not that nims doesnt respect the mighty challenge of 8000ers but its just that he believed in himself much more than one can imagine.Beyond Possible: One Man, Fourteen Peaks, and the Mountaineering Achievement of a Lifetime by Nims Purja". Massive respect for the entire team of Sherpas who were there with Nims , working as a team in true sense in times of adversity and life threatening situations. From his childhood growing up in Nepal, to a career as an elite soldier in the British army, Purja shows how his early life shaped him and enabled him to go beyond what people though was possible. Man muss ihn nicht sympathisch finden, man kann durchaus kritisieren, dass er etwas fahrlässig mit seiner eigenen Gefühlswelt umgeht bzw. In this spellbinding memoir , tied to the acclaimed Netflix documentary “14 Peaks,” Purja reveals the man behind the climbs, explaining how his early life in Nepal and training as a soldier in Britain’s elite Gurkha and SBS units allowed him to achieve a mountaineering mission few thought was attainable.

Matt Allen does a really good job of organising the material and it’s really well put together and exciting – the photos are great, too.It reminded me a bit of Banner in the Sky, which was written in 1954 but set in 1856, and just goes to show that reading about harrowing experiences has a long (and chilly! I decided to put this down ro cultural differences and not to let it get in tge way of listening to what had been achieved. The energy of the book gives it pace and you whip through, rather as Purja nips up verticals… Whether or not you are a lover of the mountains, you will marvel at his tenacity, his fearlessness. It’s clear from this account that he has a very high risk tolerance, and I wish it had addressed what that means and the emotions surrounding it a bit more.

His story is so inspiring - true grit and passion that made him lead the life he wanted from his childhood. He lead a team of fellow Gurkhas, rescued climbers off peaks, highlighted the ill effects of crowding at Everest, the litter left behind by expeditions, all the while calmly ignoring personal problems which he had aplenty - poor response, no funding to start with, permissions and above all, his mother's failing health. Not only does Nims have exceptional physical stamina, he's also a leader with great skills in financial management and logistics. There are big opportunities lying ahead and I truly hope that a next writing attempt (maybe using a professional writing assistance) will be able to take advantage. I wish and assume that you'll be able to redeem your narration through the documentary on your exploits.

Not just for him, but all those serving in the forces where this must be a common survival mechanism. He served as a Gurkha and in the elite Special Boat Service (SBS) before leaving to concentrate on his passion for mountaineering and exploration. The book does well to bring out any moments when he does waver, opening notably with a near-death experience in an avalanche and featuring his anger when no other climbers will help him try to rescue two lost men and wobbles and an inadvertent surf down an avalanche on his final mountain. Purja is notable for having climbed all 14 eight-thousanders (mountain peaks above 8,000 metres or 26,000 feet) in a record time of six months and six days with the aid of bottled oxygen. This ofcourse conditions him to be better than average person but yet the enormity of his project cannot be understated.
