Description

When it comes to boosters, the one that I always recommended for people was, of course, CL1 Cloudlifter. Which is a classic.

FetHead Phantom is an ultra-low noise, high quality, in-line microphone preamplifier. It provides improved sound for condenser microphones. Small, compact, but powerful, Fethead Phantom utilizes tried and true FET technology to deliver up to 18dB of clean boost. No more cranking your mic preamp and adding unwanted noise to get your microphone to an acceptable volume.Boost your microphone! The DM1 has a male XLR connector at one end of the tube and a female XLR at the other, and this is placed between your microphone and your regular mic preamp. It is powered by the preamp's standard +48V phantom power and draws a modest 3mA. It doesn't pass the phantom power on to the connected microphone, so there's no risk of damage to vintage ribbons or faulty mics. There are no switches or controls, so all you have to do is remember to feed it phantom power and adjust the gain on the mic preamp as usual. In addition to providing useful gain when you need it, the buffered circuity also makes the sE DM1 a practical choice when feeding long cable runs. However, if you have a USB mic, you will need an interface or a mixer for generating the phantom power, which increases the setup costs. When connected to the right mic, it will result in low-noise outcomes.

Comparing the Fethead vs Cloudlifter

It can provide the gain that amplifies the signal of the mic to produce clean recordings and you will be able to take advantage of the ribbon mic or enhance the overall outcomes of the low-output mics. We explore this topic more in our dedicated article Is a Cloudlifter Necessary? Mic Activators Explained. Is a Cloudlifter a preamp?

A Cloudlifter (or alternative mic activator) is necessary if you’re using a low sensitivity dynamic or ribbon microphone and the preamps of your mixer/audio interface don’t provide the gain needed to bring your microphone up to the required level.

Specifications

The preamp has four JFETs, which improves the input impedance and will make the preamp equally suitable for small rooms. In addition, these are low-power components and consume less space in the circuit.

These ranged in price, but one thing was sure, they were much cheaper than the original Cloudlifter! You should get an instant answer on whether your application has been successful, though in some rare cases Klarna or V12 may need to look at the application in more detail. They're also great on Ribbon microphones as they provide an enhanced impedance match, taking the weight off of the microphone which results in a sharper transient response. This will prove particularly useful for adding definition when capturing soft sources. Ribbon protectionA preamp is what provides amplification. Mic preamps can come in different forms though and it’s worth covering those first as each one has it’s pros and cons. My old Alice Mic-Pak outboard preamp – lots of clean gain and doesn’t cost the earth. Types of Microphone Preamps It also features a dedicated buffer amp to give you a consistent +28 dB gain boost regardless of the connected load. Moreover, it does a great job at rejecting RF and electrical interference, which makes it desirable for on-location use. Verdict

Compact amplification with a direct-to-mic design that provides protection for older passive microphones. That’s not just my opinion; many people who were starting their streaming channels or podcasts grabbed a Blue Mic (Yeti or Snowball) or a similar USB microphone. This has been our head to head for the two most popular products in the mic activation market. As you can tell, there are pros and cons to both devices. If you can handle a little extra noise in your recordings then the FetHead is the obvious choice, with its ultra-transparent high gain signal boost. If you are less concerned about coloration and are looking for a product that can prescribe gain based on what your mic needs, then the CL-1 is the activator for you. Cloudlifter is known to power the ribbon and dynamic mics and you won’t have to install a USB interface. For this reason, it’s known as a preamp that improves the microphone signal quality.
