Description

The world of Shetland police HQ is as we knew it - warm, reassuring and familiar. But change is coming and with it, fresh challenges for the team. However, when Peter Ayre’s car is spotted in the hospital car park the night Ellen’s body went missing, the police head to his house, only to find a horrific scene unfolding. Peter is in the middle of a strange ritual, where he is burning a fire in the grass in the shape of the mysterious symbol from Ellen’s tattoo and chanting and singing around a bonfire, which at closer look has Ellen’s body lying in the middle of it. But if that wasn’t enough, there’s one more twist in the episode when Calder finds out her father had an affair with Ellen’s mother, Stella Quinn. Does this mean Calder has been investigating her own sister’s murder without even realising? What happens in episode 4? I would say that Phyllis, Dawn and Lorraine really brought everyone together. They are wonderful, charismatic, generous women who really led the way with their performances and their professionalism. Sometimes it was hard to concentrate during the scenes because watching them perform was so distracting, like being in the front row of a hit show. This new series is so fresh. The heart of the show remains - the team that we know and love - but everything is shaken up by the arrival of Calder and the crime that comes along with her. Calder brings out a different side in all of us, she draws us out of our cosy comfort zones and challenges us to dig deeper. Ashley Jensen is phenomenal in the role. She is a wonderful mix of an absolute hoot and a consummate professional. There were days when I laughed so hard my stomach hurt and I was in danger of crying all my make-up off. But we never, ever lost focus or took our eyes off the ball. Figuring out our chemistry together was an outright pleasure and I'm really proud of what we created together.

As you view disk to disk you get to know and understand the characters and their feelings come through.

We all have a WhatsApp group together and keep in touch and I imagine there will be lots of fun messages when the show airs. Tosh and Calder grill Peter Ayre, their prime suspect in Ellen Quinn's murder. But while his ancient religious ceremony from the last episode has left everyone suspicious of him, it soon becomes clear that he has an accomplice when a box of letters is discovered in his house. I think the pace of Shetland is an issue for Calder because it’s much slower than London and the urban policing she’s used to. Ruth’s a little bit of a lone wolf, she often dances to her own beat. How do Ruth and Tosh get on when they first meet and how do you see their relationship progressing?

Scotland and Shetland is a very special place and these films portray that well. The brogue is a little confronting sometimes. sometimes However, Calder’s hostility to Shetland will challenge Tosh’s view of her adopted home and their journey into the darker recesses of Shetland's past and present will test this fragile, new partnership." What happened in episode 1? This cast was extraordinary. Because the show has been reconfigured, it felt like a new beginning in a way and everybody really embraced that. It felt like we were all creating this new thing together, taking ownership and really giving it everything. The chemistry among everyone was off the scale. We had so much fun together, and we worked hard and we really worked as a team.

It's hard to even describe what this journey has meant to me. I never, in a million years, thought I would still be playing this character over a decade after I was originally cast in the part. Tosh's superpower is her empathy, her ability to connect, her humanity. She has a softness and a kindness that is authentic and that means people trust her and will open up to her. This also allows her to get inside the heads of others, and to understand what might be motivating them and to make sense of their behaviour.
