Em was a bit impulsive (as many fantasy heroines tend to be), but her fearlessness and personality really spoke to me. Otherwise, you have what happened here where everything is about her and our assassin is like a fly buzzing by every now and again. When a character can’t speak you need your narrator to include more observations or content to balance things out.

There were a lot of refreshing aspects, like Creon having to communicate through written notes (even though you can imagine the communication problems that brings) and him being incredibly morally grey, and Emelin having forbidden magic. This fantasy romance includes most of my favorite tropes however the story felt slow to me which made me lose my focus a few times and I didn't connect with the heroine much.
