Description

Author hopes our planet to exit Anthroposcene, because there can not be “good Anthropocene”; current ~scene is only gona lead humans to destruction and possible extinction. This is a deeply philosophical book about the changing emotional connections humans make with the lands upon which they live. While often Albrecht's writing is intelligent and deals with nuance he also at times comes across as naïve. At one point, the globalized "melting pot" of eco-systems is presented as "a reality" we can no longer change, and so is the globalized "melting pot" of cultures. A book for our time, which offers optimistic possibilities to address our earth emotions now and into the future.

He has created an extensive glossary of terms that relate to emotional responses to nature and environment.

The battle between the forces of destruction and the forces of creation will be won by Generation Symbiocene, and Earth Emotions presents an ethical and emotional odyssey for that victory. The most obvious, and strongest interest is in the lexicon itself, and how it interacts with my own pre-existing interest in issues to do with ‘place’ (a bastardised word if ever there was one in modern public policy-making); ‘the particular’ (the detail, the unique, the small things which seem to disappear each day with ever increasing homogeneity demanded by the dominant economic model); as well as with the environment more generally, and with local history, and how all manner of public policy splices through all of these at various levels.

The pain or distress caused by the loss or lack or solace and the sense of desolation connected to the present state of one’s home and territory. He established the now widely used and accepted concept of solastalgia, or the lived experience of negative environmental change. It means a love of peculiar places, so it is about a strong sense of place, but infused with cultural and historical identity. Earth Emotions speak about current century and newly descriptive terms help to understand mostly explainable emotions and how psyche and body connects with Earth, moreover how climate change affects mental health. The emotional resonance of his work was strong, and I wanted to discover more about it – both his method, and his thinking. Despite the threat that the book overcomplicates its own language, Albrecht keeps his argument relevant and justifies each term well.

As a fellow old hippy, I want peaceful change as well … but with the global ascendancy of the militaristic and violent Right, peace seems a long way off. When I did move back home, I was desolate to discover the ‘big tree’ that we used to race to at the end of the street had been felled. As climate change and development pressures overwhelm the environment, our emotional relationships with Earth are also in crisis.Grounded and powerful in its message, this book helps explain in an accessible way the history of Earth emotion neologisms and the relationships of land and psyche.

Forged from a partnership between a university press and a library, Project MUSE is a trusted part of the academic and scholarly community it serves.Glenn Albrecht is one of the most important eco-philosophers of our time, though the term 'eco-philosopher' may be too narrow.
