To break down the performance of the Vivobarefoot Primus Trail Knit FG, I tested them for lifting, versatile training, hiking, and daily wear. Hopefully, you can then cross-reference my performance with your needs. Considering Vivobarefoot is pushing for a green future, I’d trust they’re using materials that will last. This feeling is more a matter of trust. Trust that the environmental message they’re pushing is true, and they do care about the footprint they leave (nice pun, eh!). Can I repair the shoe? The other thing that needs to be seriously considered if you are thinking about making the change to barefoot running shoes, is the type of terrain you are likely to be running on.

If you want a pair of barefoot shoes that works exceptionally well for hiking and trail running that can also perform strongly in the gym then the Vivobarefoot Primus Trail Knit FG can be an awesome option to go with. Who Should Invest In the Vivobarefoot Primus Trail Knit FG? The insole is fully removable and drops you an extra 2-3mm closer to the ground. I would love this, but it’s only an option for those with deep feet that fill out the shoe. Rather than being a decision about feel, having the insole in or out is more a decision of fit. Let’s talk about the weight When it comes to hiking, the Vivobarefoot Primus Trail FG has done a pretty good job. I see this shoe as being a really good 3-season option for anyone wanting a model for light to even pretty technical terrains. The barefoot shoe movement is gaining momentum in both the running world and for everyday wear. So I was super keen to give them a whirl to see what all the hype is about.Sadly, Vivobarefoot does not offer repairs on the Primus line. But many of their other casual models can be returned for repairs and sprucing up. However, they do have a recycling program once you’ve finished with the shoes.

Second, the lugs on this shoe actually make this shoe’s sole grippier than some of the other Vivobarefoot shoes on the market that are designed specifically for training. I think if you’re regularly training on turf and grass, then this can be a big win for your needs. But I want to see more stability, and I don’t want a shoe this heavy. So, who is the Primus Trail Knit for? It’s a domino effect at work. Grip is impressive too, even on slightly softer ground, which is just as well because moist trails are often hard to avoid in the UK. However, it is worth considering if you satisfy certain criteria. 1) You have the budget for a number of shoes and would like one of them to be minimalist. 2) You are also planning to use your trail shoe for walking and other everyday activities –the Vivobarefoot x Finisterre would be great for off-road hikes of less than 10 miles, for example. Value for money Another area where I think the Primus Trail Knit FG will fall short is for those wanting a hiking-focused barefoot shoe for colder months or more technical terrains. While this model can work for these settings, you may want to find something with more warmth.Plus, the lugs aren’t so aggressive to where they take away from walking on flatter surfaces like concrete. Lastly, and while appearance is subjective, I do think this shoe has a nice clean, and refined appearance to them. Vivobarefoot Primus Trail Knit FG Sizing Interestingly, and despite their minimalism, I feel very stable running in these shoes. They don’t feature extra ankle support, nor do they have any form of lateral support through the arches — they’re barefoot shoes! But the fact that your feet are so darn close to the ground means that if you do go over on your ankle, you don’t have far to go. Your slowly strengthening ankles and feet will deal with the topple with no problems. This may be just me, but I’ve certainly found them to be surprisingly stable. Versatility The 6.5mm outsole consists of a 3mm rubber base, 2.5mm lugs, and a 1mm puncture-resistant layer. The 1mm layer adds a little peace of mind if you step on a nail or a thorn (which I have done in other shoes… it went straight through). Does the FG tread provide enough grip? Features of the Vivobarefoot Primus Trail FG Upper fabric The tough uppers are made from recycled PET mesh. The multi-ply materials are designed to deliver optimum lightweight breathability and comfort.

There’s plenty of room for the big toe to spread. On the flip side, the big toe has plenty of space, which is excellent as it allows for perfect big toe stabilization and optimal propulsion. There’s no tongue on the shoe; does that affect the fit?Once you can’t repair or don’t need them anymore, send us your old Vivos and we’ll make they sure they’re given a second life, or if they’re really well-loved, we’ll store them until we launch our recycling solution.
