I am familiar with “bus spotter”, those guys in the UK who take photographs of buses and coaches but have never come across a “busboy”. Robert Rexton is convinced his daughter-in-law faked her own kidnapping, and his son died trying to save her. She’d hung a lot of big abstract paintings on the walls—not a Kandinski or a de Kooning— He paused to gesture at the art on his walls. This is not the sort of work Nicole prefers; she would rather leave this sort of thing up to the police but the reality is when a major client asks for your help, the Agency needs to give it. Find out who she was, where she came from, and what she was doing before she walked into his son’s life.Nicole is uncertain about involving the police and crosses paths with a detective who she feels a spark of romance might eventuate. There were plenty of what-if’s thrown at the reader and I was looking forward to Nicole solving the mystery. The police chief, quoted widely on the news, said, We’re putting all our resources into finding both missing women—Victoria Reina and Ashley Rexton—and apprehending those responsible for the death of Bradley Rexton.

He knew what I was thinking: that he couldn’t have attracted such a beautiful woman unless she was after his money. But things get complicated after someone associated with another kidnapping is killed, one of the other victims goes missing, the police get involved, and Nicole’s money drop is not picked up… twice! Days later, under remarkably similar circumstances to the case she is investigating, someone near and dear to Nicole is kidnapped and a ransom of her full inheritance is demanded. She was in some kind of high-roller circle at Neiman Marcus that gave her entry to a VIP dining room.The premise for this book was great, but if fell short in the intrigue, suspense and speed of the action for me, and where I thought it was going to all come together it felt incomplete in some way. At first, it appears to be the work of a serial kidnapping ring, and all she’d have to do is pay the ransom, and her sister would be released. But she’d already made up her mind that the first person she’d get in touch with would be Antonia—no last name given, just the word housekeeper—who appeared under A in Ashley’s address book.
