Mark Dvoretsky diedon September 26, 2016, at the age of 68 and trained most elite chess players including world champions Garry Kasparov, Viswanathan Anand, and Veselin Topalov. In 2003 he published Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual, which became the standard endgame reference book for the chess world. The author uses color-coding to distinguish between basic endgame knowledge and reference material which makes it easier to study. Basic endgame concepts: Pawn structure, king position, passed pawns, triangulation, zugzwang, and more. Training exercises: A variety of exercises and problems to practice and improve your endgame skills.

An endgame is a decisive stage of the game. It is the point at which the winner is determined, and the loser is forced to resign." The revision has been done by German GM KarstenMüller. With the passing of Mark Dvoretsky, Karsten has been generally recognized as the premier endgame analyst and theoretician in the world today.

Here is what Vladimir Kramnik, the 14th World Champion, had to say in his foreword to the fifth edition: Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual is quite simply a masterpiece of research and insight … Most of all, Dvoretsky's analysis is staggering in its depth and accuracy." - John Watson at The Week In Chess. Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual ... may well be the chess book of the year... It comes close to an ultimate one-volume manual on the endgame. Lubomir Kavalek in his chess column of December 1, 2003 in the Washington Post.

The fourth edition is from 2014 so now 6 years old. According to the publisher, the major changes are: One of the unique characteristics of the Endgame Manual has been the highlighting of text considered to be essential to the understanding of endgame theory. The late, great trainer Mark Dvoretsky carefully selected the text to be highlighted so that players at all levels could benefit from this monumental work. Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual ... may well be the chess book of the year … [It] comes close to an ultimate one-volume manual on the endgame." - Lubomir Kavalek in his chess column of December 1, 2003 in the Washington Post There have been new developments in several areas of theory (e.g., Bishop Endgames), and these were added. There is a new foreword by former world champion Vladimir Kramnik and a new introduction by KarstenMüller. When it appeared in 2003, the first edition of Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual was immediately recognized by novice and master alike as one of the best books ever published on the endgame. The enlarged and revised fifth edition is better than ever! I consider Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual an absolute must for every chess professional, and no less important even for a club player… I always recommend this book… I consider it to be one of the very best chess books published in recent times and I am very pleased with the new enhanced edition…" I am sure that those who study this work carefully will not only play the endgame better, but overall, their play will improve.
