frtls (22 September 2022). "Kobo 2E Internal Images - SD Card Confirmed". r/ereader . Retrieved 20 May 2023. Speaking of dingy, the screen has sort of a rough and dirty appearance when viewed at an angle, whereas the Kindle Paperwhite looks really clear. Head-on you can't really notice it, but side-by-side the Kindle's screen is sharper and clearer. It must have something to do with the layer used for the frontlight. It has happened to me before while trying to downgrade my Kobo Mini to firmware version 2.5.1 from 3.4.1.

However, if you really want to tinker with the parameters of the text, bring in ebooks and documents in several different formats and arrange them in custom collections, then you should be looking at a Kobo ereader. That goes double if you live outside the US and are keen on borrowing library books. Kozlowski, Michael (22 January 2022). "Kobo unveils Sideload Mode to their e-readers". Good e-Reader . Retrieved 27 January 2022. The distinguishing feature of this device is the frontlighting technology, allowing a user to read in the dark ("Glo" referring to "Glow" as in "Glow in the dark"). By lighting from the front, the light is less intrusive than an LCD. This light is called the ComfortLight. [3] This light is controlled with a button (to turn it on) and the software (to adjust brightness). According to Kobo, having a uniform distribution of the light across the screen was accomplished with a nano-printed fibre-optic film. [4] Depending on which ereader model you buy from either brand, your home screen setup will appear differently, with the number of tabs at the bottom changing if you have a note-taking ereader. Kobo’s OS is a bit more comprehensive here, with multiple tabs for ebooks, notes and Kobo’s own store. There was a time when Kobo would have been your port of call if you wanted to display the book cover on the sleep screen of your ereader, but Kindle now lets you do that too.

Extras

Kobo devices offer basic Wi-Fi across the entire range, which will suffice for most users, and that’s true on most Kindles, too, although dual-band Wi-Fi is now available on the newer Paperwhite models. Linux on the Kobo Glo HD ( part 1) ( part 2): I don't understand a word of it but it seems to work. The brightness of the light is adjustable with an on-screen slider bar, and unlike the Kindle Paperwhite, the frontlight can be turned off completely by pressing a button along the top edge of the device. Like the Kobo Touch, the Glo is all touch-based. There are only a few buttons: the power slider up top and a button for turning the light on and off. Unlike the Kindle Paperwhite or the Nook with GlowLight, there’s no on-screen way to turn on the light. However, when the light is on, you can adjust the brightness on screen.

As I said in the intro, the light is pretty impressive and can be adjusted with an onscreen slider. At its brightest setting, it's very bright in a dark room, so you'll want to turn it down to midlevel or maybe even lower. While there's a touch of cloudiness at the bottom of the screen where the LEDs are, it's no worse than what you'll see with the Paperwhite and the uniformity is quite good -- the light splays out pretty smoothly across the screen. The color seems a touch different than Paperwhite (it's less white), but I found the hue fine for reading.

Kobo Glo Technical Specs

This isn’t a problem unique to this Kobo or Kobos in general, but when I start to miss the Kindle is when I look for a new book to read. Kobo offers a very solid but ultimately not-very-dynamic bookstore. Kobo eReader.conf tweaks: Hidden features that can be enabled after editing a .conf file. Some of them no longer work. That sounds all good and fine unless you don’t have a paperclip (I’ve been there). Then it becomes a chore to find something small enough to fit in the reset hole… You spend a lot of time on little things. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's good that you helped me get better by criticising, but it looks like you spend a lot of time writing that.
