As for “Strays” — the CBC’s upcoming “Kim’s Convenience” spinoff centering on Jung’s work supervisor — Liu expressed resentment toward “all of the circumstances that led to the one non-Asian character getting her own show,” adding that he would “adamantly refuse” to reprise his role in the show, “not that they would ever ask.” Through a swath of rejection and comical mishaps, Simu's determination to carve out a path for himself leads him to not only succeed as an actor, but also to open the door to reconciling with his parents.

Witty, honest, inspiring and relatable, We Were Dreamers weaves together the narratives of two generations in a Chinese immigrant family who are inextricably tied to one another even as they are torn apart by deep cultural misunderstanding. Let's just say, it's really hard to be seen as cool amongst your peers when your parents assign you hours of extra homework every night. And it's similarly hard to admit to those parents, years later, not only that you've lost your respectable accounting job — the one they invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in to prepare you for — but also that you kinda want to be an actor. verifyErrors }}{{ message }}{{ /verifyErrors }}{{ Writing the book – which involved long, detailed weekly conversations with his parents, with whom he now has a good relationship – allowed him to see how their own experiences of life had informed the way in which they treated him. “It made sense, in a way that doesn’t necessarily excuse or justify their actions,” he says. “Without that context, I just felt like they were out to rid my life of any sort of joy or happiness.” Writing it felt like a love letter to every immigrant family that has overcome so much to come to a new country Davis, Erin (28 February 2017). By the time Liu reunited with his family in Toronto, he was four years old and, as the publisher notes explain, “emotionally distant and difficult to relate to… separated by culture, language and values.” Liu is decidedly closer to his parents these days, as evidenced by their countless appearances on his social media feed. In addition to recounting his experiences of breaking into Hollywood, Liu spent time talking to his parents about their journey, which informed entire passages of the book.
