There was Houston's 1983 Merv Griffin Show appearance, where her mother thought the band needed to pick it up and so started conducting them herself. She wanted women, namely Robyn, and because she couldn’t have what she wanted, thus began a downward spiral of self-denial, self-loathing, and self-destruction. Even though there were the rumors, lies, gossip and dysfunctional ways that were said and written about. It's hard to review and rate memoirs, because of their personal, unique nature, but this was one of the most moving memoirs I have ever read. And yes some of the rumors were true, they did have a physical relationship at one time, but it ended long ago.

For anyone who listens to whitney, especially her live stuff, she is all about uplifting ones spirit and brings her gospel influence to her singing. It was also a time when mainstream stars had to be even more unimpeachably heterosexual, and Crawford’s visibility – she was always by Houston’s side – became the subject of increasingly frenzied speculation.

Imagine if Whitney grew up with a mother who who affirmed her both in her relationships and in her talent. The story told by Robyn Crawford in the pages of A Song For You, an account of her decades-long relationship with Whitney Houston is tender, moving and painful to read, the history of a friendship that is also a love story. Then I read about Robyn and I read quotes from Cissy - and I saw film footage of Cissy and it all fell into place. I think she slapped my face because she felt that I had done something, and she wanted me to know that I’d earned that slap. Behind closed doors, Houston often said that she couldn't be herself, as she made plans to go through with her marriage to Brown.

This book broke my heart over and over again, but I'm so thankful that Robyn had the courage to set the record straight, and to give her own deeply heartfelt, incredibly intimate perspective on the life of Whitney Houston. Crawford was there for Houston's meeting with Michael Jackson; the two women jumped on the Neverland trampoline and winced at a roomful of dolls that a housekeeper said were prone to walk around at night. They are simply living their authentic lives as people today are far more tolerant and empathetic, which is so refreshing and shows as a society how far we have come and how archaic this world once was. Despite Houston's heavy touring schedule, that considerably wore her down; Cindy Madnick, the bookkeeper of Nippy Inc.You can tell she really loved her friend and had her best interest at heart even in writing the book. I didn’t know anything about Whitney besides her songs, but this books illuminates her life and trajectory as “the lucky one”. A generous, loving book that has more insight on Houston's career--the ride, the fall--than any other single source that I've encountered . There’s clear animosity for both people’s partners, and I was just sad and uncomfortable for the both of them! Robyn really knew Whitney better than anyone and she humanised her throughout this book and made sure Whitney was present on every single page.
