Description

Every adult at Wooburn Green is trained to deliver Little Wandle phonics and reading to ensure that phonics and reading are delivered in the same way in every year group and by every adult. I’m “just” a parent, but books like Songbirds Phonics definitely seem to follow a phonetic difficulty progression through the bands. Discuss the pictures, enjoy the story, predict what might happen next, use different voices for the characters, explore the facts in a non-fiction book. Our Little Wandle SEND Programme – which is included within the general membership package – has been developed to be used with the graduated approach to teach children to learn to read in small steps that provide the right amount of challenge.

Schools across the country start teaching phonics in this way every year and find it really helps children settle in. I’d agree with Biff, Chip and Kipper era books just being less words, some of the words in even the easiest bands of these books aren’t easy at all! These children urgently need to catch up, so the gap between themselves and their peers does not widen.Little Wandle is only Letters and Sounds repackaged after the DfE admitted the original version wasn't fit for purpose so most of the phonic books written to match Letters and Sounds should be suitable. Our training is available online and on-demand throughout the year and we run Welcome Zooms and Reading Leader training every week to get schools started. It maps the Little Wandle books to the old reading bands which gave me some assurance all is going ok. If one of them is stuck for an idea, the other usually comes up with something or makes a cup of tea.

At Wooburn Green Primary School, it is our aim that every child will learn to read, no matter what barriers they may have to their learning. The SEND Programme isn’t additional practice for those children who are falling slightly behind their peers. You can use these with your child at home to help them with their pronunciation of phonemes and recognition of corresponding graphemes. We recommend that international schools contact our membership team in the first instance to discuss your requirements. We offer a 20% built-in discount and free protective jackets to ensure your new books withstand the rigours of the home-school book band programme for as long as possible. My DS is currently reading at the hardest end of Phase 2 (summer born reception) which probably equates to the easier end of red books using the list someone linked earlier.

Pupils in EY and KS1 are given reading books each week, which directly link to the phonics sounds they are being taught so that phonics knowledge is consolidated. Parents should use voices, expression, discuss unfamiliar vocabulary, talk about the pictures, and predict what might happen next. It is essential not to use other strategies to work out words (including guessing words, deducing meaning from pictures, grammar, context clues or whole word recognition). By the end of Pre-School, children are well prepared to begin learning grapheme-phoneme correspondences (GPCs) and blending in Reception. The 32 Phase 3 Big Cat books match perfectly to the Little Wandle progression and support all the Letters and Sounds / Tricky words and words children meet in this phase. There will be an exciting mix of stories and non-fiction to foster a love of reading in all children.

Reading Books for Little Wandle Discover an exciting mix of stories and non-fiction that are matched perfectly to the Little Wandle progression and support all the Letters and Sounds phases.Weekly content grids, lesson templates and ‘How to’ videos all help to ensure that all adults maintain consistency in their teaching and this is monitored half termly by the Reading Leader and SLT so that any misconceptions or inconsistencies can be rectified as soon as possible. Small group reading provides children with an opportunity to practice and apply what they have learnt in phonics.
