Not just because the plot was predictable, unoriginal and something I've read so many times before, not because the characters were laughable stereotypes of stereotypes, and not just because the writing was simplistic and derivative. The novel has some wonderfully nasty characters and the narrative zips along. Character development was adequate enough for me to care about the fates of the main protagonists, even if disbelief had to be suspended on many occasions. I'm a reader of 100+ books per year, I studied English literature, and I've been on The Today Show'sRead with Jenna Book Club, Buzzfeed, The Atlantic, Esquire, Mashable, The Everygirl, Glamour, and more. My essay was published in the book But I'm a Gilmore!

The structure of the book is perfect. The first third is Amber’s POV, the second is Daphne’s and the third part is a bit of a combination conclusion. (I enjoyed Daphne’s section so much more than Amber’s!) What makes the novel work is the careful arrangement and pacing. The twists weren’t really all that surprising, but they are still delectable and immensely entertaining. The story is a bit of a cautionary tale, a warning to beware of what appears on the surface, to never judge a book by its cover, or blindly trust people. But, it was also a story of escape and empowerment- albeit, one with an unconventional approach, as well as a tale of retribution- which was the most satisfying part of this enjoyable parable.

Book Summary

They should have layers and appear altered when viewed from different angles. (No one is all “one” thing.) It takes a lot for me to hand out one star. I save those for flaming piles of shit. But, I’m making an exception in this case. I think totally hated this very strongly, just on principle. The story follows the main character "Amber Patterson", an unlikable but fascinating bad bad girl who is running from the law. She dreams of a better life and with her new identity, Amber arrives at a vacation spot of the rich in Colorado to make a catch. I so despise her, but dang this is very entertaining! Amber Patterson is envious of Daphne Parrish who is a rich socialite living in Fairfield County, Connecticut. The two women have never met but Amber develops an obsession with her wonderful lifestyle. Daphne has a rich and handsome husband, two beautiful daughters, full time staff, interesting acquaintances and is president of her own foundation. Amber has few of these attributes and is jealous that someone else gets to live such a great lifestyle. She is fed up with her current environment and decides to make drastic changes. She extensively researches the Parrish family so that she can find a way to befriend them and enter their lives. Daphne did marry the man of her dreams, is rich beyond her wildest dreams, and currently living in an incredible mansion.

That’s the balance of the universe. I am a huge fan of the writing duo, Liv Constantine, and The Last Mrs. Parrish is one of my all-time favorite books of theirs, so I was thrilled when I saw that they had written a prequel to that book. Amber Patterson is one of those characters that you love to hate and I was so excited to get more of her. I needed to see where she came from and how she become the person she was when we first met her in TLMP...and oh boy, this one sure doesn't disappoint. It may be short but it is well worth it! I absolutely loved The Last Mrs. Parrish, so when I saw that this short story was a prequel to that book, I knew I had to read this!Let the games begin: alien hunter Daniel X is ready for a fantastic adventure to save gamers-and the universe-from certain doom. This book also felt really unoriginal. All the *twists* and major plot points I could see coming from a mile away, not to mention they felt ripped out of actually great thriller books.

Captivating. . . a deliciously duplicitous psychological thriller that will lure readers until the wee hours and beyond. With a plot equally as twisty, spellbinding, and addictive as Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl or Paula Hawkins’s The Girl on the Train, this is sure to be a hit with suspense fans.”— Library Journal (starred review) This was terrible because for a brief, shining moment, I thought, "Maybe this will be a good book. Maybe I'll like this one." It REALLY IS EXTRA-ENJOYABLE to enjoy a book or AUDIOBOOK ‘with’ a buddy in the same room as we did during dinner prep together last night ....cutting our zucchini- yellow squash -broccoli - garlic and onions in the kitchen to mix with pasta. Se… https://t.co/ra7RPgf7Fv Mar 30, 2023, 6:13 PM Of course I loved The First Shot. We all love to hate Amber, right!? She truly is the worst kind of human but I’ve gotta give her credit for her resourcefulness.A fun and fast-paced psychological thriller about two determined women who play a high stakes game of deception that only one can win.” Read on if you like spoilers but trust me it won’t matter either way because the awfulness of this book stands on its own **
