It’s about teens who love dreaming of being rich and famous and in love, dreaming of a world that is beyond what they have. Alice Oseman effortlessly and joyfully brings these characters and others to life, treating her subjects - and the subject matter - with compassion and non-judgement, while discussing questions of friendship, teenage identity, fandom and online friendships. If she can’t be found reading or watching a TV show with her cat on her lap, you’ll find her at the cinema or out taking photos and exploring! And we have Jimmy Ricia, front man of The Arc band , who is currently going to a tough phase in his life managing himself between all this fame, new contract , loads of work and of course his mental health.

I’ve heard countless incredible things about this story, and I found not knowing anything about this story going in to it was the best thing to do.Her webcomic Heartstopper has been translated into several languages, and Oseman recently announced she’d sold its rights and that a TV show is on its way. I especially appreciated the relation between fandom and (heavily implied) mental health issues; we hyperfixate on things like bands, books, tv shows because they let us escape from our negative thoughts and feelings, and Angel's relationship with The Ark's fandom really shows that. Her work is honest and diverse, and her themes resonate with the ones of her generation: mental health, queerness, navigating friendships, fandoms, and the internet. Also Angel’s sexuality is not mentioned a great deal, but she gives hints of being asexual or bisexual, which is a refreshing change for an English girl in a YA book.

I’m so glad that this novel was released when i was older so i could reflect on that time of my life. Oseman also has a particular gift for bringing the characters on the page alive in a really believable way, especially those Gen Z characters. His identity is not pivotal for the plot, but it adds color: it is not a problem for the world, for his best friends (and bandmates) nor his fans, but it is something that had repercussion in his life. There are two things I like to say when talking about Alice Oseman’s I was born for this: it is not only good trans representation, it has the right amount of chaotic bisexuality I needed in my life.Oseman explored not only the dark places of being famous and how you start being an object of someone’s fantasy, but also what an unhealthy obsession with someone or something can do to you. It might have been the way I connected with the fandom aspects of the story, but I adored the character build up and the way they were introduced with such ease. I fell so in love with her writing, her characters, and her messages, that I knew I wouldn’t be able to resist picking up something else by her.

If you’re unaware, the story follows Angel (if you don’t want to know anything about the plot, stop reading now). Frances is on the path to Cambridge, even though she's not quite sure why she's so determined to get there. In difficult times their music helps me to get through the day and they always make me smile which is pretty amazing. the characters felt so REAL everything was so wonderfully written from the plot, to the characters and their separate arcs. She shows the difficulties of fame, how hard it can be to meet an internet friend in real life, and how sometimes breaking up is the best choice for both people. But as long as we are here, the three of us, and we get to make music, and we get to live this life – playing our music in a new city every week, bringing smiles to millions of faces, leaving our mark upon the world – then everything is good, and fine, and okay. From this point of view, it perhaps makes sense that teenage fans construct their sense of self around these friendly, smiley, (and maybe in love with you! Then she meets Michael Holden, and they try to unmask the mysterious Solitaire (and survive A-Levels) in Alice Oseman's stunning, unflinching honest debut novel, which first introduced her fan-favourite Heartstopper characters Nick and Charlie.

I was reminded of my NSYNC days when reading this, remembering how I collected their merch and thought that going to one of their concerts was the greatest moment of my life at the time. And I’ve never really been obsessed with a “boy band” but I have for been a part of fandoms that have quite literally saved my life. Now I have officially booked Lister as my guy bestfriend because every minute I will spent with him I know I will never fail to laugh ! He is going through some really tough time and he have these violent episodes of panic attacks which literally scared the shit out of me. And she puts so much in her books, from racial rep, to different religions, to sexual rep, to mental health.
