Description

K-1503 and K-1523 Vacu-vials: 2 month limit on supply is recommended, however refrigeration can extend shelf-life. Further fields of applications are the analysis of foods & beverages and of environmental and agricultural samples (e.g. soil). This product is manufactured by BioVision, an Abcam company and was previously called K370 Ammonia Colorimetric Assay Kit. K370-100 is the same size as the 100 test size of ab83360.

Ammonia is an inorganic form of nitrogen that contains hydrogen. It is a plant nutrient often found naturally in water at low levels due to the decomposition of organic plant or animal matter. Higher concentrations in surface waters are toxic to aquatic life. When the pH is low, the reaction is driven to the right, and when the pH is high, the reaction is driven to the left. In general, at around room temperature, at a pH less than 6.0, the proportion of ammonium-N plus ammonia-N as NH3 is very-very low and as NH4+ is very-very high. At a pH around 8.0 (the assay buffer pH), the proportion as NH3 is 10 percent or less. Laboratory methods measure ammonium-N plus ammonia-N. It is very difficult to directly determine the activity of aqueous ammonia, so instead the surrogate of ammonium-N plus ammonia-N is used. Analytics and Sample Preparation > Test Kits and Photometric Methods > Areas of Application > Waste Water > AmmoniumThe chemical equation that drives the relationship between ammonia and ammonium is: NH3 + H2O ↔ NH4+ + OH- Analytics and Sample Preparation > Test Kits and Photometric Methods > Areas of Application > Construction Material > Ammonium

This kit therefore measures total ammonium in solution. At physiological pH, nearly all ammonia will exist as ammonium in solution.P280: Wear protective gloves/ protective clothing/ eye protection/ face protection/ hearing protection.

There are many different chemical components of the aquarium water that potentially can be tested, but for most people, a water test kit that covers the basics is sufficient. At a minimum, your kit should test for: CHEMetrics offers test kits for the determination of Ammonia in aqueous solutions employing the well-known Nessler reagent to deliver sensitivity and accuracy within two minutes or less, as well as kits employing the Hydroxybenzyl Alcohol (HBA) method which offers similar sensitivity without generating any mercury-containing waste. Ammonia concentrations are routinely measured in wastewater effluent, drinking water, surface water and seawater. When considering a test kit, make sure it gives results that are appropriate for your system. Nitrate levels, for instance, should test at very low levels in saltwater tanks, whereas some freshwater systems can have higher levels. Testing for low levels of nitrate would be appropriate for one system and not as critical for the other. In some disinfection processes, ammonia is intentionally combined with chlorine to produce monochloramine. Though free chorine is a more powerful disinfectant, monochloramine (bonded ammonia and chlorine) has a stronger residual so it remains in the distribution system longer, thus ensuring disinfection is maintained all the way to the tap. Furthermore, chloramines react less intensely with various impurities in raw water, particularly organic substances, thus minimizing the formation of some carcinogenic disinfection by-products (DBP). To optimize the chloramination process, it is important to monitor the formation of the target disinfectant species, while preventing the formation of less desirable dichloramine or trichloramine (nitrogen trichloride). Monochloramine testing is used together with a free ammonia determination to ensure formation of the right disinfectant and reduce raw material costs by preventing the overfeeding of chlorine and/or ammonia.
