still Big Red, / I sizzle, I scorch, / But now I pass the torch, / The ballots are in, / And one girl has to win, / She's perky, she's fun, / And now she's number one, / K-K-Kick it Torrance, / T-T-T-Torrance! A champion high school cheerleading squad discovers its previous captain stole all their best routines from an inner-city school and must scramble to compete at this year's championships. Reed talks about production details, alterations made to the script, casting information and actor notes, and lots of thoughts on story interpretation.

So now if they want to keep their championship dreams alive, they need to come together as a team and create their own, original cheer, and cheer like they've never cheered before. On the flip side, we've all heard the bad commentaries where it's just some guy is just describing exactly what you are seeing on screen. However, she never lets the role degenerate to the role of stereotype, as she makes Torrance bubbly and believable as a cheerleader but also adds depth to her. But for newly-elected team captain, Torrance (Kirsten Dunst), the Toros' road to total cheer glory is stopped short when she discovers their perfectly-choreographed routines were stolen from a hot hip-hop squad across town. And the fact that the movie never wavered from its position that to these girls (and some guys) cheerleading was very important. BIO fares nicely when it depicts the squads at work; some strong choreography and fine staging makes these scenes surprisingly vibrant. Nonetheless, it’s a fun piece that’s executed in a manner that flirts with excess and absurdity but manages to keep enough of a foot in reality to be entertaining.

As if having to find new cheers were not enough trouble, Torrance also has romantic decisions to make: She has to choose between her oily but pretty current boyfriend and Missy's less popular but rocking brother, Cliff (Jesse Bradford). It’s often hard for kids today to pull off that kind of rock attitude, but Bradford has a scruffiness that makes him endearing. On paper the role she plays in this movie is kind of tricky as it's a potentially unlikable character. However, I did enjoy the experience, as the movie was cute and sassy enough to entertain me, and not just because of all the sexy young women (though that didn’t hurt).BRING IT ON melds a hint of the satire in such movies as SMILE and DROP DEAD GORGEOUS with the competitive fire of films such as THE KARATE KID and WHITE MEN CAN'T JUMP to provide a captivating story enhanced by the engaging performance of rising star Dunst. which of course ignores the fact that male cheerleaders get to spend much of their time handling the bodies of extremely attractive young women. What's the real difference between a PG movie and a PG 13 movie except that a PG 13 movie is a better bet at the box office.
