Dual Diagnosis
Dual Diagnosis is a term used to describe a condition when an individual is suffering from both a diagnosed mental health illness as well as from addiction. Where both are present and especially where medication is prescribed to manage the mental health difficulty, careful consideration is needed in assessing suitability for a residential treatment placement. With twenty-four hour nursing cover and additional support from GPs and Consultant Psychiatrists, Broadway Lodge is well resourced to provide appropriate care and support for individuals with a dual diagnosis and seeking this type of treatment.
As the treatment setting is based on the principles and daily routines of a therapeutic community, it is essential that anyone seeking admission to Broadway Lodge is able to manage the social environment and community expectations that this environment demands. Therefore, assessment is the first and very important part of the process for all potential patients as it is vital that we ensure suitability for the treatment being provided. As part of the process for dual diagnosis referrals, information from relevant mental health service professionals will be sought and a link with community mental health service in the home area established.
During treatment, medical and therapeutic programmes will work in conjunction with each other and throughout their stay the Consultant Psychiatrist will follow the client’s progress and meet with them on occasions if it is deemed necessary or helpful to do so. Towards the end of treatment, aftercare planning will be essential to ensure that appropriate post-treatment care and support is identified. At Broadway Lodge we encourage all our clients to make a commitment to attending self-help groups such as AA or NA for instance as we believe they can play an important role in supporting their recovery.
